CD163 protein is pivotal in macrophages for clearing and endocytosing hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes, safeguarding tissues from oxidative damage. It contributes to iron recycling by facilitating complex endocytosis and heme breakdown, with calcium and pH influencing hemoglobin binding. This initiates intracellular signals involving tyrosine kinase, calcium mobilization, and cytokine secretion. The soluble form, sCD163, released through shedding, may have an anti-inflammatory role.
