Cytokines

Cytokines are small secreted signaling proteins released by cells, which have a specific effect on the interactions and communications between cells. Cytokines modulate the balance between humoral and cell-based immune responses, and they regulate the maturation, growth, and responsiveness of particular cell populations. Some cytokines enhance or inhibit the action of other cytokines in complex ways. Cytokines act via binding to specific cell-surface receptors and activating downstream intracellular signaling, which leads to changes in function or phenotype. Cytokines regulate diverse biological functions including innate and acquired immunity, hematopoiesis, inflammation and repair, and proliferation through mostly extracellular signaling. Cytokines may act on the cells that secrete them (autocrine action), on nearby cells (paracrine action), or in some instances on distant cells (endocrine action).
