Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a tumor originating from the parafollicular cells, or C cells, of the thyroid gland. Medullary thyroid cancer produces calcitonin, and elevated calcitonin level. MTC is characterized by nests of round or ovoid cells with fibrovascular stroma.
