The cluster of differentiation (CD) antigens is a protocol used for the identification and investigation of cell surface molecules present on leukocytes. Some CD proteins often act as cell-cell or cell-matrix adhesion molecules, cytokine receptors, ion pores, or nutrient transporters. Some CD proteins play a role in cell signaling, other CD molecules mediate cell adhesion. Signal transduction or cell signaling concerns all biochemical processes by which cells translate extracellular signals originating from their environment into specific responses.
