Located in cell surface; neuron projection; and plasma membrane. Is active in GABA-ergic synapse. Is integral component of postsynaptic membrane and integral component of presynaptic membrane. Used to study brain ischemia. Biomarker of cerebral infarction; epilepsy; temporal lobe epilepsy; and withdrawal disorder. Orthologous to human SLC6A1 (solute carrier family 6 member 1).
