The CXCR4 protein functions as a receptor for the CXC chemokine CXCL12/SDF-1, triggering an increase in intracellular calcium ions and activation of MAPK1/MAPK3. It is actively involved in AKT signaling, which is critical for regulating cell migration, especially in wound healing.
