The MFG-E8 protein plays a critical role in promoting the phagocytic clearance of apoptotic cells in various tissues. As a specific ligand, it interacts with alpha-v/beta-3 and alpha-v/beta-5 receptors and also binds independently to phosphatidylserine-rich cell surfaces.
