The multifunctional PL-PRO protein plays a critical role in viral RNA transcription and replication, providing the necessary proteases for multiprotein cleavage. It strategically blocks host translation by binding to the open head conformation of the 40S subunit, impeding ribosomal mRNA entry into the tunnel.
