The SLC38A1 protein acts as an symporter, facilitating the pH-dependent cotransport of short-chain neutral amino acids and sodium ions across cell membranes. Crucially, it mediates astrocyte-derived glutamine transport to GABAergic interneurons, contributing to de novo GABA synthesis.
