BGAT 是一种糖基转移酶 (glycosyltransferase)，作为 ABO 血型系统 (ABO blood group system) 的基础。它通过催化碳水化合物向 H 抗原 (H antigen) 的转移反应，形成 ABO 血型的抗原结构 (antigenic structures)。在 ABO 血型分类中：A 型和 B 型个体分别通过添加 UDP-GalNAc 或 UDP-Gal 将 H 抗原转化为 A 抗原 (A antigen) 或 B 抗原 (B antigen)；AB 型个体同时表达这两种活性；而 O 型个体则缺乏此类酶活性。
