Peroxiredoxin 1 是一种硫醇特异性过氧化物酶 (thiol-specific peroxidase)，能够催化过氧化氢 (hydrogen peroxide) 和有机过氧化物 (organic hydroperoxides) 分别还原为水和醇。它在细胞抗氧化应激 (oxidative stress) 中发挥重要作用，通过解毒过氧化物 (peroxides) 以及作为过氧化氢介导的信号事件的传感器。Peroxiredoxin 1 可能通过调节细胞内 H(2)O(2) 的浓度参与生长因子和肿瘤坏死因子-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha) 的信号级联反应。此外，它还能还原 GDPD5 中的分子内二硫键 (intramolecular disulfide bond)，从而调控 GDPD5 驱动有丝分裂后运动神经元分化的能力 (by similar)。
