The ST3GAL4 protein, a beta-galactoside alpha2-3 sialyltransferase, crucially sialylates glycoproteins and glycolipids. It mediates hemostasis by sialylating VWF, preventing ASGPR recognition and clearance, and regulates platelet clearance. ST3GAL4 is integral to sialyl Lewis X epitope biosynthesis, facilitating leukocyte adhesion and transendothelial migration. In glycosphingolipid biosynthesis, it sialylates gangliosides, contributing to myelin formation.
