Diethanolamine (DEOA LF; NSC 4959) is a weakly basic amino alcohol, mainly used as a surfactant and emulsifier, and is commonly found in personal care product formulations. Diethanolamine increases the expression of IL-6, IL-8, IP-10, growth-regulating oncogene (GRO), chemokine (fractalkine), MMP-1, MMP-9, and MMP-10, which are factors involved in acute inflammation and the recruitment of monocytes, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. Diethanolamine reduces the levels of PDGF-AA, TNFα, MCP-1, and TGFα. Diethanolamine may potentially be involved in the disruption of the cervical barrier and the pathogenesis of preterm birth[1].
