The HVCN1 protein plays a crucial role in cellular function by mediating voltage-dependent proton permeability, forming proton-selective channels that allow protons to pass along electrochemical gradients. This channel promotes proton efflux, which in combination with membrane depolarization contributes to the generation of reactive oxygen species during phagocytosis.
